Education

Hands-on, environmental education is offered here at Smithgall Woods – Dukes Creek Conservation Area for adults and children of all ages. The Smithgall Woods Regional Education Center (SWREC) was established at the park in 1997 in response to the growing demand for a broad field of environmental education. Professionals from various areas of expertise in the GA DNR collaborate to share their personal knowledge and experiences in topics such as fisheries management, game management, and law enforcement.

School Field Trip and Outreach Programs
SWREC offers both onsite and outreach programs for students in
cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (GA DNR) and Wildlife Resources Division., and GA DNR Historic Sites Division.

Teacher Workshops
Teacher Workshops are held each year to help teachers learn more about North Georgia’s ecosystems and the unique opportunities that are available here at Smithgall Woods, while earning PLU credits. Programs are site specific and are based on biologically sound principles.

Public Programs
The park offers an active calendar of public programs throughout the year. From Falconry to weaving, to medicinal plant workshops, the calendar has something to offer everyone. Special events are a particular draw. Click on the events tab to see some of the most popular events we offer for adults and children. To get the most up-to-date information about public program offerings call 706-878-3087 and leave your name and e-mail address. Otherwise check the Georgia State Parks website for the majority of programs offered at the park.

Group Programs
Each year, the demand for group programs increases at Smithgall Woods. Organizations such as Garden Clubs, women’s groups, church groups, and scouts request on-site programs just for their group. Programs that are
offered include exclusive hikes, environmental education programs, and specialty programs based on group interest. Groups of 10 or greater can be accommodated based on the availability of staff and/or trained volunteers.
